Firmware Versions on the SkyProdigy Series

Read This as Well

SkyProdigy scopes have two sets of processors. There are processors in the hand control (HC) and there are processors in the base of the scope in a section known as the motor control (MC).  The MC firmware can be updated by the owner (read this).

The SkyProdigy is provided with a StarSense hand control.  The original SkyProdigy has a version of camera that is incompatible with the current StarSense hand control and firmware. That version of SkyProdigy has no RS-232 control capability and does not work with AUX devices (like the Celestron GPS module).

The current SkyProdigy has the newer camera and uses the current StarSense hand control. This hand control can be updated with CFM to the latest StarSense firmware, it has RS-232 control capability and it does work with AUX devices.

This change would have occurred in 2014, but I'm sure the shelf stock of old SkyProdigy units were around long after that. The way to tell would be the hand control version displayed in the menu: anything with an HC version of 1.06.13201 or higher is the newer version. (1.06.xxxxx is a higher version than 1.1.xxxx).

Read this for step by step instructions on upgrading the hand control firmware.

Celestron has posted an official page detailing all firmware versions for the hand control:

Check back periodically for updates or click the link to sign up for notifications.

The motor control has not received any updates since the mount was introduced.
