Basic Information about the NexStar Evolution Series

In the summer of 2014, Celestron brought wireless connectivity to their computerized telescopes with the introduction of the NexStar Evolution. A single-armed mount, the Evolution has built-in WiFi allowing a tablet or smartphone to take the place of the included hand control. Alignment and control of the mount is accomplished using a free smartphone/tablet app called SkyPortal or the more advanced SkySafari Plus/Pro. Additionally, Celestron offers the SkyPortal WiFi Module which brings the same WiFi connectivity to all of their current computerized mounts. The Evolution series is available with 6, 8 and 9.25 inch SCT optical tubes or an 8 inch EdgeHD optical tube. Additionally, the mount uses the CG-5/Vixen bracket to mount the tube to the fork arm.

The standard 6, 8 and 9.25 inch Evolution models come with the NexStar+ hand control with a database of over 40,000 objects. The EdgeHD model is packaged with the StarSense AutoAlign camera and StarSense hand control for fully automated alignment.  The 9.25 inch model comes with a more robust tripod to handle the significantly heavier optical tube.

The Evolution mount utilizes worm gear drives to provide smoother tracking, although there is no PPEC as found in the CPC mount. The altitude (declination) and azimuth (right ascension) axes have releasable clutches to allow easy balancing, essential for achieving accurate tracking for longer exposure astrophotography.

The Evolution mount is powered by built-in, rechargeable LiFePO4 battery. LiFePO4 batteries feature a 2,000 charge lifetime compared to about 300 for the more commonly used lead acid battery packs. And the battery chemistry is environmentally friendly. The Evolution even includes a USB port for powering your smartphone or tablet.
